If you don’t like rum… well, first of all, who doesn’t like rum!? But if you don’t like rum (crazy fool), you’re definitely not going to like this week’s cocktail.

Cockspurs, Rum, Hot buttered rum, Cocktail, Alcohol, Cinnamon stick, Butter, Lemon peel

Hot buttered rum is the perfect Winter warmer. From toes to nose, a cup of this will keep you toasty wherever you are. But this is a cocktail that has that familiar alcohol-burn at the back of the throat. This version is the simple version, but you can try the fancier one if you want to show off (ingredients at the bottom of the post and instructions in the link).

You will need:

Glass mug (or sturdy glass)

Ingredients:

  • 60ml of dark rum
  • Cinnamon stick
  • 1 pat butter (just a thin slice will do)
  • 1 slice lemon peel
  • Boiled water

How to make it:

Put the cinnamon stick, lemon peel and rum in the mug. Fill it with boiling water* and float the butter on top. You can either choose to stir it in yourself, or leave your guests to stir it in themselves.

This has warmth, spice, and the taste of Winter all wrapped up in one satisfying mug. Another incredibly potent one (you won’t need too many of these to feel jolly), but definitely worth sipping. Clasp in your gloves and enjoy the warmth.

The fancy version:

  • 1 bottle of dark rum
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 2 cups of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • Pinch of salt
  • Boiling water

This should give you enough to put around 90ml of dark rum in each glass with room to fill with water. Perfect for a festive party with fireworks and bonfires!

*To stop the mug breaking from the heat, leave a spoon in it
