Dairy Free Eating: Breakfast

If I didn’t have as much fun being gluten-free, I’ve also chosen to try going dairy-free for a while. There is a slight difference in that I’m not actually allergic to dairy, but dairy can affect your skin and as a sufferer of both eczema and breakouts I thought I would try cutting it out of my diet to see what would happen.

So far, my love of cheese and chocolate has not been very helpful and I haven’t really stuck to it. But I’m going to try and be good this week. And, what better way to be good than to have to blog about it?

First up: breakfast.

Nature’s Path do a delicious gluten free cereal called Mesa Sunrise. Made from corn, flax, quinoa and amaranth it reminds me of a sort of gluten-free Special K or Bran Flakes version. It can be a bit flavourless on first try, so I’ve added sultanas for extra flavour, but you can try it with chopped banana or fresh berries.

I have tried soya milk, but I didn’t like the aftertaste. Instead, I’ve gone for Alpro almond milk (for goodness’ sake ALWAYS get the blue one – the red unsweetened one is awful!)

This breakfast sets me up for the day. It’s filling enough to keep me through to lunch and I feel super-smug that it’s a relatively healthy meal as well as gluten and dairy free. I much prefer the flavour of almond milk – even in tea. It has a mild nutty flavour, and all the texture and impression of normal milk.

One bowlful:

  • 55g Mesa Sunrise
  • 10g sultanas
  • 125ml Alpro almond milk
