The Best of the Foundations

With my skin, it’s inevitable that I have a good range of foundations and creams – and I’ve tried a lot in the past too. I’ve tried tinted moisturisers, foundations that promise varying properties of wonder, and even the fabled BB Cream. But what actually works? I think I’ve finally trimmed it down to the bare bones – the best for my needs.

Because there are a few key things that I want from a foundation:

Beauty, Make-up, MAC Cosmetics

Good coverage

The MAC Studio Fix Fluid, £21.50, is perfect coverage, all day long. Very little caking, and it smoothes my skin tone perfectly – blemishes and red skin be gone! Unfortunately, it is quite thick, which means it clogs my skin…

Make-up, Beauty, No7

Light on the pores

I don’t want anything too cloying to clog up my pores and cause breakouts. Which is why the No7 Beautiful Skin BB Cream (for normal/oily skin), £13.50, is great. It’s light and easy, with coverage to hide redness, and even can replace a moisturiser. With this, though, I do get shiny patches coming through later in the day…

Beauty, Make-up, YSL, Yves Saint Laurent, Teint Radiance

Mattifying

With oily skin, “mattifying” is the magic word. It’s too easy to cake on the foundation and powder and find it sliding off your face as the day goes on, and causing breakouts. The Yves Saint Laurent Teint Radiance, £29.50, might claim “radiance” (it does that too), but it’s one of the most mattifying foundations I’ve found. Unfortunately, it’s colour errs on the pale side and I have to use a blend of powder and bronzer to give myself a healthy look…

Beauty, Make-up, No7

Invisible

I don’t want people to know I’m actually wearing foundation! The natural look is key, and that’s where the No7 Intelligent Colour foundation, £15.50, comes in. The most natural look yet (which does sadly mean the red blotches show through), and so when I want the barely-there look, I know where to turn.

Do you wear foundation? What’s the best one for you? Is there anything I should try?
