Food of the Month: Pears

We’re in the dog-days of summer, which also means the last of the summer fruits and moving towards the winter warmers. This month, I thought I would hang on the last vestiges of warmth by picking the ever-underrated pear. Pears are great for cooking with, and go equally with sweet and savoury dishes (try with blue cheese for an indulgent salad or with blackberries for a different twist on a crumble), and even prop up pretty well solo: bake with amaretti for a straightforward pud, or preserve with ginger to go with cold meat and cheese.

But after my various baking escapades with Great Bloggers Bake Off, and my experiments in the kitchen with varying healthy recipes, I thought I would cut it right back and go simple.

Pear coins

You will need:

Chopping board

Sharp knife

Baking tray

Baking parchment



3 conference pears

1 tbsp Demerara sugar

1 tsp ground ginger

How to do it:

Preheat the oven to 110°C.

Slice your pears as thin as you dare and spread out on baking parchment on your tray. In a bowl, mix the sugar and ginger and then sprinkle evenly over the pear slices.

Bake in the oven for 3 hours.

Leave to cool, and then eat!

It really is that simple. Admittedly, you have to have a spare three hours, but if you’re not up to much on a lazy Sunday, this serves up a treat. Scale up to as many as you want, because these are tasty, with just the right amount of warmth from the ginger. There’s nothing quite like a plateful of these to treat yourself. I can just imagine eating them with a warming bourbon cocktail and my feet in front of the fire!
