Milan Fashion Week SS’15: Fashion Round Up

Thursday 25 September 2014 by

Milan Fashion Week is usually by far the most outlandish of the Fashion Weeks, with the likes of Gucci, Prada and Cavalli vying for top spot in the most opulent of shows. I love the madness of Milan, which offers the most interesting of trends to come out.

Top Three Trends for SS’15

Philipp Plein, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Monochrome stripes

As seen on Philipp Plein, bold and brassy monochrome stripes are back. Blended seamlessly with bright colours, they come in black-and-white or black-and-grey. The only requirement? Go big. Thick stripes, horizontal or vertical, try the Beetlejuice look.

Stella Jean, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Mix-and-match prints

Polkadots, stripes, city prints or animal dots, make like Stella Jean and wear it all at once. Bright colours, bold prints, strong silhouettes, do it all. It might be too bold of a statement for the office, but it’s definitely worth a try.

Emilio Pucci, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Prada, Gucci, even Emilio Pucci were harking back to the seventies this season, with fringing, gypsy tops, bohemia and halter necks. The Pucci collection was bright and ethereal. Time to invest in peasant tops, maxi dresses and flares.

The Not-So Top Trend for SS’15

Moschino, Barbie, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Okay, so it might not be a trend that takes off, but Moschino certainly made an impact with their Barbie girl-inspired show. It’s exactly as you imagined it. Pink, big hair, roller skates, even teeny weeny polkadot bikinis and gangster Barbie.

Top Five Shows at MFW SS’15

Francesco Scognamiglio, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Francesco Scognamiglio

He might have been up against fashion powerhouses Gucci with its seventies throwback and Alberta Ferretti with its bohemia, but Francesco Scognamiglio was a huge success on day one (just don’t ask me to pronounce his surname). I love the summery twist on autumnal shades (mustard yellow, pale blue, warm brown) with large flowery splashes and trembling, delicate fabrics.

Prada, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Described by Vogue as “spin-tingling good”, I have to agree that Prada was a truly special show on day two. A seventies-tasting show, with damask and brocade, offset against clog boots and bowling bags with tan accents, frayed hems and an air of last-minute-perfecting. It was a darker palette than we usually see for spring/summer campaigns, but it felt fitting. Sleek and classy with the hint of last minute-ness. Perfection.

Missoni, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Another Erdem, Missoni shines with its spring/summer collections. Imagine long, lazy days with friends on the beach and you’re halfway there. Soft, floating fabrics, including hammered silk, with loose cuts and Mediterannean blues, hazy pastels, and crisp summery stripes of brightness. The Missoni intarsia pattern was evident, as were feather-light knits, all making it a distinct, familiar collection.

Jil Sander, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Jil Sander

In a refreshing change from the opulence of Milan Fashion Week, Jil Sander – with new creative director Rodolfo Paglialunga at the helm – was clean cut, with a simple palette and uniformity. Apron-style skirts, sweaters and narrow-cut shirts, barcode-stripe patterns, and shades of navy and burgundy. It was an impressive first outing for Paglialunga.

Dolce & Gabbana, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Dolce & Gabbana

There is always something refreshingly familiar about Dolce & Gabbana, and yet wildly out-there. A convincing blend of Sicilian pomp with lace and gems, and Spanish matador. Bewjewelled and floral, boleros and flamenco dresses, ponchos and carnations, all in colour-bursts of red and black and white and polkadots. It was a sleek and beautiful collection, very recognisable as Dolce & Gabbana, and yet with their new 2015 twist.

Top Beauty Tip for SS’15

Missoni, Beauty, Lips, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Red lips are always a perfect summer addition, and this year they are back with a vengeance. Clean, matte lips, with a natural face (try golden brown on the eye and a brush of bronzer across the cheek, just like Missoni).

Best FROW at MFW

MaxMara, Amy Adams, RTW, Fashion, SS'15, Milan Fashion Week

Amy Adams looked amazing in this electric blue trench coat on the front row of MaxMara. Just a couple of seats down from Anna Wintour, she smiled the whole way through the show. Wherever she got that trench – I want it!
