The genius that is Jessica – the brain behind How Sweet It Is – has come up trumps again with this delicious cocktail that is perfect for both summer and autumn. Filled with warming autumn flavours, but perfect when chilled, the cider bourbon jam cocktail with ginger beer is perfect for this back and forth weather.

You will need:

  • Mason jar (frosted in a freezer for a few minutes)
  • Teaspoon
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Apple/orange slice for garnish

Ingredients:

  • 90ml apple cider
  • 45ml bourbon
  • 1 tsp jam (pick a sharp citrus marmalade for best results)
  • 60ml ginger beer
  • Freshly grated nutmeg

How to make it:

Put the cider, bourbon and jam into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and shake until mixed. Pour in to the frosty glass (one of Jessica’s tricks: a frosty glass keeps it cold and means the jam doesn’t stick to the ice cubes). Top up with ginger beer, grate a tiny pinch of nutmeg and serve with the garnish. Keep hold of your teaspoon because you will want to stir occasionally so the jam doesn’t settle.

This is a sharp tasting cocktail that is like an icy winter’s night in front of a bonfire, but the coldness makes it refreshing enough for a summer barbecue (multiply up and serve in a jug!) You must like ginger beer for this one (because it’s especially gingery), but the apple cider takes the edge off, and the fizz makes it delightfully indulgent.
