Marathon Series: Distraction Techniques

Welcome back to week twenty one of my Marathon Series, as I blog my way to a marathon – from beginner to 26.2 miles. This week, we’re talking about distraction techniques.

Sometimes you just really don’t want to go for a run. And no matter how easy you make it, sometimes you just need to stay distracted enough to get around. So here are some tried and tested techniques to distracting yourself from a run…

Run with someone

There’s nothing quite like having someone else to talk to in order to get through a run before you’ve noticed. Find someone at your speed and you will motivate (and distract) each other every time!

Music

Okay, so I know I recommend that you don’t run with music, but if you must, then pick a good playlist – it will help you get round.

Scenery

I hate to say it, but running around roads simply won’t cut it. Pick somewhere pretty: try somewhere with beautiful scenery, or if you’re in London, why not run along the river (nothing quite like Big Ben to distract you from sore feet).

Mini-goals

Give yourself little goals as you go around. Try the Zombies, Run! app. Try to beat your kilometre-times.

Have fun

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from Bangs and a Bun, you have to enjoy your run. Forget time:  why not stop and have a little dance? Just go and run for the sheer hell of it, and forget the watch.

What do you do to distract yourself from a poor run?

Don’t forget to let me know how you’re getting on, using the hashtag #HoBFitness. And check back in a soon when we’re reviewing the Armpocket.
