Yes Please, Amy Poehler, Pan Macmillan, Book, ReadingYes Please by Amy Poehler

In Amy Poehler’s highly anticipated first book, Yes Please, she offers up a big juicy stew of personal stories, funny bits on sex and love and friendship and parenthood and real life advice (some useful, some not so much). Powered by Amy’s charming and hilarious, biting yet wise voice, Yes Please is a book full of words to live by.

Amy Poehler is one of the best comedians out there, and she’s now written the hilariously brilliant Yes Please. Part memoir, part essay, it tells the story of her life making it as a comedian, with a smattering of advice here and there. But she does it with style – it makes me laugh out loud.

Poehler resonates. She speaks about the things that women are constantly worried about or talking about. It feels refreshing to deal with the same kind of honesty in a book as you get on a night with your friends.

There’s a lot of name-dropping, but there’s something joyous about it – Poehler loves her life (as well she should) and is celebrating the very fact that she is doing something she loves with amazing people. These stories are full of happiness and excitement – no matter how long she’s been doing it, she loves her job every time she performs.

There are some hard truths as well – Poehler is comfortable in her own skin and reading Yes Please is like hearing wisdom without being preached to. There are so many nuggets of genius, that you are left feeling uplifted every time you read it. It’s the age-old cliché of Girl Power, with added oomph. It’s empowering, and it’s energising. It makes me love Amy Poehler even more.

Yes Please is a call to enjoy life – to grab what you want and say YES PLEASE loudly and happily. It’s about being unapologetic, it’s about having the strength to say NO THANK YOU as well, but also to never close the door. It’s time to enjoy life like Amy Poehler.
