Film Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy, Film, Chris Pratt, Marvel

There comes a certain point when you just want the real world to go away, and I reached that point over the last few days. It’s stifled the fun stuff. Which is why I decided that I needed something light hearted and easy. That’s where Guardians of the Galaxy comes in. When you want pure escapism, there’s nothing quite like a Marvel film to get you going.

Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a band of misfits as they try to protect – well – the universe. Led by Peter/Starlord (Chris Pratt), these are a bunch of criminals (often hapless) that tend to hate each other and end up being pushed together to stop a Big Baddie destroying the world with an Infinity Stone.

To be honest, if you don’t know what an Infinity Stone is, and you don’t really watch Marvel films, this is probably not going to be the review for you. Because I love these films more than anything. And I’m fully prepared to nerd out on Guardians.

Forget the dark X-Men films, the explosive Avengers worlds, the complicated interaction between the TV series and the others. Guardians ties in to most of that, but it also stands completely by itself. It’s a comedy more than anything. Heartwarming, entertaining and filled with more jokes than action, this is something to watch to cheer you up.

You’re always going to have fun watching this film. You will fall in love with all of the characters – especially Starlord, although I do have a special love for Drax (Dave Bautista). This film feels like a love letter to all the Marvel nerds out there. This is pure joy in action film form. The script is tight – full of pertinent commentary on the Marvelverse, smattered with teasers, and then glossed with some of the wittiest dialogue out there. There’s only Deadpool that compares with humour.

I’m not even going to attempt to explain the plot, because it does feel very secondary to everything else. This is pure escapism and pure entertainment. If you need to disappear from reality for a while, then grab yourself two hours and watch this film. If nothing else, the soundtrack is incredible!
