Luna Cinema

Luna Cinema, 10 Things I Hate About You, Outdoor Cinema, Victoria Embankment Gardens, London

Considering I’ve lived in London for nearly two years, it seems unfathomable that I have never been to an outdoor cinema. But when I saw that 10 Things I Hate About You was showing at the Luna Cinema in Victoria Embankment Gardens, I couldn’t resist anymore.

Based all around the country – with several spots in London – Luna Cinema puts on films in beautiful outdoor spaces for the entirety of the summer. Prices aren’t cheap (a basic ticket is £13.50 for adults), but they are worth it for the added experience of cinema under the stars.

10 Things I Hate About You has to be one of my all-time favourite films, so loaded up with picnic stuff and back rests (you can get these from Luna and keep them after for a hefty £12 a pop), we settled in. Thankfully, despite the overcast day, the rain held off. There is also a bar and food at the venue, but you can bring your own if you don’t want to pay the extra.

We arrived pretty early so we could eat and gossip, and then as soon as it got dark enough, the film started. The atmosphere felt much more exciting than a normal cinema outing – some people even sang along to the closing credits! Perhaps it was the film we had chosen, but I get the feeling that being outdoors with prosecco, popcorn and a really good film makes all the difference.

There was a brief visitation from a couple of mice which caused a few shrieks (welcome to outdoors in London), but other than that it was a good atmosphere. There is nothing quite like sitting outside with Heath Ledger serenading you to put you in a good mood!

As I mentioned, Luna has venues all over the country – a lot more impressive than Embankment Gardens – but they don’t show every film at every one, so you have to be picky. You can choose anything from Star Wars at Cardiff Castle, to Top Gun at Fulham Palace, The Goonies at Rochester Castle, to Die Hard at One New Change. Most films are cult favourites or classics, so there’s the added bonus of a bit of nostalgia to go with your picnic blanket.

I can’t believe it took me so long to go to an outdoor cinema! It gets chilly, so bring a woolly jumper, but as long as the rain holds off you’re guaranteed a good experience. Luna are experts at this kind of event, so despite the price, I would definitely go with them again.
