Moomins, Southbank Centre, Moominland, Exhibition

Who doesn’t love the Moomins? These curiously-shaped creatures have been capturing imaginations for decades, and now the Southbank is paying homage to our childhood friends in an exhibition as part of the Winter Festival.

Southbank Centre’s Adventures in Moominland explore the eccentric world of Moominland and the Moomin stories through the life of its author – Tove Jansson. Started in Finland, the Moomin stories have grown in popularity from their humble beginnings. In a unique immersive experience, you can discovered the landscapes, characters and stories that make Jansson’s classics so beloved, as well as learn more about the authors life and how she came to create Moominpappa and co.

Tours last about 50 minutes, and start every 15 minutes, so this is a perfect trip out for an afternoon in London. Grab a bite to eat along the Southbank, and then dive in to Moominland… quite literally, as this show requires a bit of crouching and rafting (so wear sensible shoes!) thanks to the Southbank’s very own forest and sea.

Tickets are from £13.50, so it’s super cheap too. One of the best bits about it though? It’s narrated by Sandi Toksvig! Plus, you discover so much about Jansson and the Moomin stories that you’ll be dropping little facts for years. For example, did you know that Moomintroll’s shape is inspired by clouds and snow?

Even if you’re not the biggest fan of the stories, this is well worth the visit because of the nature of the exhibition – it’s beautifully done, with loads of fun for kids (there are adult-only times if you don’t want to share), and is really a great tribute to a fantastic children’s author. Worth every penny!

Southbank Centre’s Adventures in Moominland runs until 23rd April 2017
