Buhler & Co, Brunch, Eating out, Walthamstow

It makes such a difference when eating out is made simple. With a gluten intolerance, that’s not always the case, but at Bühler & Co, it is. This cute little spot in Walthamstow offers a menu that is not only gluten free, but also boasts gluten free and vegan options. Bliss!

I chose to go for brunch – but Bühler & Co offers a delicious looking evening menu too, with chickpea fritters, soba noodles, bao buns, and lime and avocado cheesecake as just some of the choices. As for the day menu, this is a simple array of brunch and lunch options, including sourdough toast, scrambled eggs on toast with garlic butter mushrooms, and even a delicious looking Indonesian Gado Gado (baby potatoes, tofu, greens, shallots and peanut sauce – both vegan and gluten free). The cheesy soldiers with cucumber sticks went down a treat with the family next to me, whilst the quinoa cakes (with avocado, poached egg, beetroot houmous, feta, dukkah, pickled red onion and leaves) were popular with the more adventurous eaters.

As for me, I couldn’t resist the French toast, with house-made strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries, salted hazelnuts, mascarpone and maple syrup. The gluten free option was a simple bread replacement (no brioche for me), but the bread was definitely homemade and came in two thick slabs doused in maple syrup. I loved the crunch and saltiness of the hazelnuts against the sweetness of the strawberry, balancing out a normally over-sweet dish. The portion size itself was almost too big for me to manage, so go hungry if you’re eating here!

My only disappointment was that the mint tea wasn’t fresh mint; but this is a minor concern in comparison to a delicious brunch. The café itself is super cute and family friendly, with plenty of bright and airy space out the back. It also offers coffee and cake to take away, and I spotted a gluten free lemon curd friand on my way out that I only wish I had had room for!

As brunch spots go, this was pretty perfect, but my next trip may have to be in the evening – I want some of that lime and avocado cheesecake!
